Beehiiv Review 2026: A Real Monetization Engine, If You Clear Three Catches

By Arthur Brulard, Founder of OwnLetter. Cross-vendor analyst review across 11 newsletter platforms, aggregating user signals from Reddit, G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and Hacker News. LinkedIn
Published June 8, 2026 · Updated June 8, 2026 · 21 min read
Beehiiv is worth it for the Substack-fatigued writer ready to turn a newsletter into a business, and it is the most complete growth-and-monetization toolkit in our eleven-platform panel. It pays small creators through a native ad network, runs paid subscriptions and digital products at a 0% platform fee where Substack takes 10%, and leads the panel on analytics. It stays free up to 2,500 subscribers and even ships a free REST API and MCP server. Three catches keep it from a perfect score: the jump from the free Launch plan to the paid Scale plan is steep the moment you cross 2,500 subscribers, the built-in website builder is the weakest surface we tested, and Trustpilot carries reports of accounts suspended without explanation. It is the wrong pick for a hobbyist who wants to stay free forever and never monetize. For anyone planning to charge readers, it is our default recommendation.
Free to 2,500 subscribers. Paid plans include a 14-day trial and 20% off for 3 months (vendor promo). Paid link, at no extra cost to you.

Hands-On: What the First Five Minutes Look Like
We set up a real beehiiv account to see the product, not the marketing site. The account is a fresh trial, so the screenshots below show capability and the interface, not a live audience or real earnings. We do not stage numbers we have not earned. Where a claim needs a real audience (measured deliverability, real ad revenue), we say so and defer it rather than fake it.
The first impression matches the reviews: the dashboard is clean and modern, and you can publish within minutes. The most-cited praise in the corpus is exactly this, a clean editor that works for beginners and pros alike. The most-cited friction is also visible early: you format, then preview, with no live what-you-see-is-what-you-get view, which lengthens edit cycles on a long post.

How we testedVerified June 2026 · 669 reviews aggregated · beehiiv tested · hands-on trial + 669 posts and reviews read in full + methodology public
What we did: Set up a real beehiiv trial account and captured the dashboard, editor, ad network, analytics, automations and website builder (June 2026). Read 669 community posts and reviews in full (Reddit r/beehiiv, Trustpilot, G2, Capterra), not sampled by keyword. Cross-validated pricing against beehiiv.com/pricing on June 14, 2026, and the feature and trust facts against our eleven-vendor data layers.
What we did NOT do: We did not run a controlled deliverability test (seed-list tests violate ToS and one account is not representative), so we never publish a deliverability rate. Our trial has no audience, so we show capability and empty states, never staged earnings or analytics.
Refresh cadence: Pricing verified quarterly minimum; the 30-claim manifest carries a source and date per numeric claim (pricing verified June 14, 2026). Full methodology →

Average score on each review site
What comes up most often
Ease of use & onboardingtop theme
Beginners find the initial setup friendly, but frequent feature additions shuffle the interface and the lack of live preview forces a format-then-preview loop that frustrates experienced writers.
“I am 77 years old, so I appreciate top-shelf work when I see it. Beehiiv appears to be an intuitive and outstanding platform that will allow me to present my AIAI.today and AI Rabbitholes publications to the world.”Trustpilot, 2026-05-15
Monetization & revenue toolscommon
Paid subscriptions, ad network placements, and referral boosts are highlights that few competitors match, though ad revenue can vanish without warning after consistent payouts.
“beehiiv lets us monetize our newsletter, easily match ads, create automated workflows, and segment our audience. It's a breeze embedding forms on our website linked to segments, making monetization straightforward and efficient.”G2, 2026-05-20
Customer support qualitycommon
Support was praised as fast and helpful in the platform's early days, but recent paid-plan users report 7-plus-day response times and describe the quality as noticeably worse than competitors.
“Customer support is really slow; it's very weak compared to their competitors.”G2, 2025-02-28
Pricing & value for moneycommon
The free plan provides a runway to test the product, but the jump to the first paid tier is steep enough that early-stage creators see it as a barrier rather than a natural upgrade.
“Pricing plans are expensive when you have a low amount of subscribers and are testing out new concepts at high fidelity.”G2, 2024-11-02
Audience growth & discoveryminor
Boosts and referral programs deliver measurable subscriber growth at low cost-per-subscriber, but acquired subscribers tend to have lower engagement, pulling open rates down noticeably.
“the referrals is the best part, the amount of subs u could get without much work is just insane”Reddit, 2026-03-29
Reliability & bugsminor
Recurring editor outages force some writers to draft elsewhere and paste in content, with multiple users noting they cannot trust the platform to be stable on send day.
“Would be nice to wake up and know that something isn't broken over at beehiiv.”Reddit, 2026-03-03
Deliverability & sending setupminor
Results are split: some large lists report zero inbox complaints over a year, while a meaningful cluster of creators document sharp open-rate declines and confirmed spam-folder placement post-migration.
“My open rates on Beehiiv dropped hard over the past month. So I checked with some of the subscribers, and they confirmed emails are landing in spam.”Reddit, 2026-03-27
Migration & switchingminor
Onboarding webinars and guided migration support earn strong praise, though some creators discover deliverability drops after switching to a beehiiv sending domain or dedicated IP.
“Bill did an excellent job guiding me through the steps needed to complete the migration process. Simplified the process. Easy 5 stars”Trustpilot, 2026-05-12
Pages & site builderminor
The integrated site and custom-domain setup removes WordPress-level complexity, but the page editor is buggy enough that basic actions like deleting sections can become impossible.
“The website builder sucks and that's putting it mildly. I was playing around with it, trying to familiarize myself and see how it works, so added a section to the homepage to see how it would look. I then attempted to delete that section, but it was impossible to do so.”Trustpilot, 2026-01-15
Automation & segmentationminor
Welcome sequences and subscriber segmentation work reliably and beat Substack's basic offering, though power users find the automation depth thinner than dedicated CRM tools like Kit.
“there's also automations which is helpful - welcome sequence, and targeted emails to certain segments which isn't possible with substack”Reddit, 2026-02-03
Analytics & reportingminor
Analytics consistently stand out. A detailed dashboard with click heat maps helped users scale faster after switching from competitors, with few meaningful complaints surfaced.
“What really sets beehiiv apart, though, is the analytics. The stats dashboard gives you a clear, detailed picture of how your newsletter is performing — open rates, click-through rates, subscriber growth over time — all presented in a way that's actually actionable rather than just decorative.”Trustpilot, 2026-03-24
Free plan generosity & changesminor
Getting started costs nothing and the subscriber cap is generous, but the free plan excludes monetization features, making external revenue strategies mandatory until upgrading.
“beehiiv free plan. They received the default welcome email. But what about my older newsletter issues/posts? I want new subscribers to also receive some of the previous issues by email after subscribing.”Reddit, 2026-05-28
Design & customizationminor
Advanced HTML and CSS options exist for technical users, but non-developers hit a ceiling on layout control for both email and landing pages, feeling the toolset is either too deep or too shallow.
“Some customization options feel a bit limited, especially when I'm trying to fine-tune the design and overall layout.”G2, 2026-03-23
Email editor & templatesminor
The composer is functional and approachable, yet cursor bugs appear in longer drafts, design flexibility is limited, and starter templates are absent despite user requests.
“The newsletter editor doesn't offer much design flexibility, which sometimes makes it difficult for me to fully customize the layout the way I want.”G2, 2026-03-04
Account suspension / terminationminor
Accounts are suspended without explanation, sometimes within days of upgrading, with no appeal path, no revenue recovery, and total loss of subscriber data reported by multiple users.
“My account was closed without any prior warning, and I have lost access to all of my subscribers and posts. Additionally, I have lost over $4,000 in revenue due to this lack of access. The customer support refused to tell me why my account was terminated.”Trustpilot, 2026-04-06
Integrations & APIminor
Native integrations are sparse beyond Mailchimp, Zapier workarounds are common, and full API access is gated behind a prohibitively expensive enterprise tier for solo creators.
“Integration are very limited has API calls and Mailchimp is only the integration option available.”G2, 2024-10-23
Content moderation & brand safetyminor
Users and third parties report that spam and phishing accounts operate on beehiiv infrastructure with abuse reports going unanswered, raising concerns about domain reputation for legitimate senders.
“My company looks after several hotels, and one of our hotels is subject to phishing using @mail.beehiiv.com. Beehiiv only interacts with a chatbot, so I wish there were ways to report the scam. This company appears very lax on security.”Trustpilot, 2026-03-17
Billing & cancellation practicesminor
No self-serve cancellation button exists in account settings, and the no-refund policy is enforced even when cancellation is requested days into a new billing period.
“When I tried to cancel the subscription, I discovered there is no cancellation button anywhere in the account settings. The option simply does not exist. I am being charged for a service I cannot access and cannot cancel.”Trustpilot, 2026-02-26
Mobile appminor
A mobile PWA existed but was discontinued about a year ago, leaving no native app option and no sign of a replacement.
“I know beehiiv used to have its own mobile/PWA feature, but unfortunately they disabled it about a year ago.”Reddit, 2026-05-28
Data export & lock-inminor
Email lists are exportable, but URL structures tied to beehiiv-hosted domains create a practical migration trap for creators who built SEO equity on the platform.
“Yes, you can export your email list from Substack or Beehiiv and import it into another platform later.”Reddit, 2025-05-29
Price increases over timeminor
Tier-level features shift without clear notice, leaving some paying users feeling the value proposition moves under their feet after committing annually.
“Tier plan functionalities change all the time and are overhyped. Definitely not worth the price.”Trustpilot, 2025-07-18

Monetization: The Reason to Choose Beehiiv
Monetization is the axis where beehiiv pulls away from Substack, and it scores 9.5 out of 10 in our model. Three things stack up that Substack structurally cannot match:
- A native ad network matches your newsletter with sponsors and pays out through Stripe.
- Paid subscriptions carry a 0 percent platform fee (Stripe processing only), against Substack’s 10 percent cut.
- And digital products sell at 0 percent too.
Across 669 beehiiv community posts, reviews and threads we read in full, the ad network is the single most-cited differentiator. The proof that matters is that small creators earn, not just big ones. One creator wrote:
“I just made $27 straight to my PayPal from a newsletter sponsor from beehiiv. I only average 5 or 6 clicks per email. You do not need huge numbers to start generating cash.”Reddit (r/beehiiv source), February 2026
Honesty check, because the reviews carry it: this is not the early gold rush. Several creators reported sponsorship rates softening through 2025 (one wrote payouts had halved per click in a January 2025 thread, now over a year old, so treat it as directional). And subscribers bought through Boosts can drag your engagement down. One creator was blunt about the tradeoff:
“I've grown my subscriber base by about 60% with Beehiiv Boosts, acquiring subscribers for $0.60 each. That being said, open rates dropped from 41% to about 32%.” Reddit (r/beehiiv source), October 2024

The Features That Actually Differentiate Beehiiv
Beehiiv covers 48 of the 53 features we track, the most complete profile of the eleven platforms we cover. But a feature count is the wrong way to judge it, and we will not argue beehiiv is better because it has more boxes ticked. The edge is qualitative. Three features carry the platform, and two are honest weak spots.
Analytics: the panel leader, and a real migration reason
In our quality layer, beehiiv's advanced analytics score 1.0, the top of the eleven-vendor panel. This is not our opinion alone. Across the 19 analytics mentions in the corpus, the tone is overwhelmingly positive, and creators name it as the specific reason they switched:
“I switched over from Kit a few years ago, because we have had better analytics dashboard that helped us scale faster on both the acquisition and engagement side, and I've never regretted the decision to switch to Beehiiv.” Trustpilot, February 2026
The one honest limit, from the same corpus, is that the analytics do not connect natively to Stripe, so revenue reconciliation is manual.
Growth tooling: referrals and recommendations that work
The referral program and the cross-newsletter recommendation network are a genuine growth engine, and the most positive growth signal in the corpus is the organic referral mechanism. One creator grew The Baseball Buffet from 500 to over 10,000 subscribers and credited the platform. The paid Boosts are the contested part (see the engagement caveat above); the organic referrals are the part creators praise without reservation.
Automations: capable, but Scale-gated and not the deepest
Beehiiv has a visual automation builder with sequences and segment targeting, clearly ahead of Substack, which has none. But it scores 0.7 in our quality layer because it is locked to the paid Scale plan and is shallower than the category leaders. If deep behavioral automation is your core need, Kit and ActiveCampaign go further. We cover that head to head in our comparisons, which is the right place for a feature-by-feature matrix.

The website builder: present, but the weakest surface
Beehiiv hosts a website and a custom domain on every plan, but the builder scores 0.65 in our quality layer, the lowest of its features, and reviewers are blunt about it (see the limitations section). Treat it as a simple archive, not a Webflow replacement.

Beehiiv is free up to 2,500 subscribers on the Launch plan. Past that you are on Scale, and this is where competing reviews get the number wrong.
Annual billing softens it to $43/mo (Scale, 1K subs) · verified June 4, 2026 at 1,000 subscribers. This jump is the friction creators name most, and it is why our value criterion scores a hard 2.8 out of 10.
Against Substack, the math flips above a threshold. Substack takes 10 percent of paid-subscription revenue; beehiiv takes 0 percent and charges a flat fee instead. At 1,000 subscribers on Scale annual, that flat fee equals Substack's 10 percent at roughly $430 of paid revenue per month. Above that you keep more on beehiiv and pay no platform cut. Below it, Substack's free plan wins. Use the calculator to find your own crossover.

The API and MCP Myth Most Reviews Get Wrong
The core REST API and the native MCP server are free on the Launch plan. That is the correction no competing beehiiv review carries: the developer crowd on Reddit and Hacker News calls the API “Enterprise, $5,000” and the MCP server paid, which is half right and out of date.
So beehiiv is genuinely scriptable on the free tier for reading and basic writing, which matters if you want an AI agent to pull your stats. If you need deep programmatic send control, that is the Enterprise wall the reviews are really hitting.
Who Controls Your Audience?
On the question every creator is afraid to ask, Beehiiv gives you partial control over the list you build. Three answers decide it.
Can you export your full subscriber list anytime?
Yes, a CSV export works while your account is active. But the terms stay silent on what happens to your list after a ban, the one moment you would most need it.source
Who else can use your content and your name?
Beehiiv takes a sublicensable license over your content and your name, voice and likeness, which lets it authorize ad partners to use your identity for promotion.source
What happens if your account is suspended?
Beehiiv can suspend access temporarily or permanently, and on the free plan its liability is capped at $100 if a platform failure costs you your list or your revenue.source
The risk in plain languageYour list is yours to take while you stay in good standing. But beehiiv holds a license to your name and voice, and the terms fall silent on export after a ban. Back up your subscriber CSV every month, no matter how well things are going.

Our take
Where beehiiv Falls Short
- The free plan ends at 2,500 subscribers, and Scale costs more than it looksLaunch is free to 2,500 subscribers. The first paid step is Scale, and on monthly billing it is $69 at 2,500 subscribers, not the $49 most reviews quote (that figure is the 1,000-subscriber rate). Our value criterion scores 2.8 out of 10 here: at the 1,000 to 10,000 range, beehiiv is among the priciest in the panel. The value improves once monetization revenue covers the cost. One creator put it plainly: "I stick to the free tier for now because the gap between the free tier and the first paid tier is just way too high." (Reddit, April 2026).
- Monetization is real but no longer the early gold rushThe ad network works, and small creators do earn. But several creators reported sponsorship rates softening through 2025 (one wrote that payouts were "paying half of what they were paying me just 2 months ago per click" on Reddit in January 2025, now over a year old), and growth bought through Boosts can backfire on engagement: one creator grew about 60 percent via Boosts and watched open rates fall from 41 to about 32 percent (Reddit, October 2024). Treat the ad network as a real bonus, not a business plan on its own.
- Accounts get suspended, sometimes with revenue withheldThis is the pattern the reviews repeat that no price table shows. Users on Trustpilot report accounts closed without explanation, occasionally the day after upgrading, in several cases with accrued ad revenue withheld. One reviewer wrote: "My account was closed without any prior warning ... I have lost over $4,000 in revenue ... The customer support refused to tell me why." (Trustpilot, April 2026). It is a documented pattern, not a confirmed policy, and Substack has its own suspension reports. The beehiiv specificity is that there is revenue at stake. Keep your list exported.
- The website builder is the weakest surfaceIn our quality layer the website builder scores 0.65, the lowest of beehiiv's features, and the reviews agree. "The website builder sucks and that's putting it mildly ... I then attempted to delete that section, but it was impossible to do so." (Trustpilot, January 2026). Templates are editorial-only and the late-2025 rebuild made older tutorials obsolete. It is fine for a simple archive, not for a real site.
- Plan-gating traps: 3 publications on Scale, late paywalls, an editor that lagsScale allows just 3 publications, the same cap as the free plan, so a fourth title forces Max regardless of list size (a trap the vendor pitch does not mention). Some creators feel "baited" when features they started building turn out to need a higher plan (Trustpilot, May 2026). And the editor can lag under load: "The editor was basically unusable today, I had to write my daily newsletter in Evernote and then cut and paste over." (Reddit, January 2026). A self-serve cancel button is also reportedly missing from account settings.
Who should skip beehiiv
Four creators who should look elsewhere
Beehiiv is excellent at one thing: turning a growing newsletter into a monetized business. If that is not you, the strengths become overhead you pay for and never use. Four profiles should pick something else.
- Hobbyists under 2,500 subscribers who just want a free home and never plan to sell: you will hit the value cliff for tooling you do not need. Substack or Buttondown fit better.
- Anyone who needs a serious website or portfolio: beehiiv's builder is the weakest surface in our review. Ghost or a real site builder wins.
- Course creators with complex, multi-step sales funnels: beehiiv's automations are capable but Scale-gated and shallower than Kit or ActiveCampaign.
- EU-first creators who need EU data residency: beehiiv hosts in the US only, with no EU option for publishers, a GDPR consideration for European audiences.

Frequently asked
Beehiiv FAQ
Is beehiiv free?
Yes, up to 2,500 subscribers on the Launch plan, with unlimited sends, a website and the recommendation network (verified June 2026). The catch is that monetization (the ad network, paid subscriptions, advanced analytics) and multi-step automations only arrive on the paid Scale plan.
How much is beehiiv after the free plan?
Scale starts at $43 per month billed annually at 1,000 subscribers (about $49 billed monthly), as of June 2026. Watch the ladder: on monthly billing it is $49 at 1,000 subscribers but $69 at 2,500, the exact count the free plan caps at. So the real cost to keep growing past free is closer to $69 per month than the $49 most reviews quote.
Can you make money with beehiiv's ad network?
Yes, even at a small scale: one creator reported $27 straight to PayPal at five or six clicks per email (Reddit, February 2026). It is not the early gold rush, though. Several creators reported sponsorship rates softening through 2025, and subscribers acquired through Boosts tend to lower your open rate.
Is beehiiv's API free?
Yes. The core REST API is free on the Launch plan and has been since 2024, and the native MCP server is free on every plan since April 2026. Only webhooks (Scale), the Send API (Enterprise) and full automation orchestration are gated. Most older reviews get this wrong and call the API paywalled.
Why do some people report beehiiv account suspensions?
Users on Trustpilot repeatedly report accounts suspended without explanation, sometimes the day after upgrading, occasionally with ad revenue withheld. It is a documented pattern, not a confirmed policy, and the same thing happens on Substack. Keep a monthly CSV export of your subscriber list regardless of platform.
Is beehiiv good for building a website?
It is beehiiv's weakest surface. The builder is functional but limited and buggy by reviewers' accounts, with editorial-only templates. Do not pick beehiiv to replace Webflow, Framer or Squarespace. Use it for the newsletter and host a serious site elsewhere.
Beehiiv or Substack?
If you have no audience and want the simplest free start with built-in discovery, Substack. If you are ready to monetize with an ad network, paid subscriptions at 0 percent, and deeper analytics, beehiiv. See our full Substack vs Beehiiv comparison for the side-by-side.
How We Reviewed Beehiiv
OwnLetter reviews as a lab-style analyst, not a power user. We set up a real beehiiv trial and captured the product first-hand (June 2026), and we read 669 community posts and reviews in full across Reddit, Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra, rather than sampling by keyword. Every factual claim traces to a source with a date in our 30-claim manifest. Pricing was cross-validated against beehiiv.com/pricing on June 14, 2026, and the feature and trust facts against our eleven-vendor data layers.
The OwnLetter Score is computed, not hand-set: eight weighted criteria, with weights fixed and published before any vendor was scored, and commission deliberately excluded from the math. We say it plainly because beehiiv pays us: this page earns a commission if you sign up, and it changes nothing in the score. The proof is the 2.8 on value, an affiliate scored honestly low where it is weak. Full methodology and weights →
